First of the Month: Go to a Football Match
I always feel a bit surprised when someone says they've never seen a dance show or been to the theatre, but have realised lately that I wouldn't be able to say I've seen much sport live, so I knew it was something I needed to fix. My dad had a spare ticket for a Bournemouth Cherries game and seeing as I'd never been to a football match, I was quite keen to give it a go.
I'm not a big fan of football on the tv, I did once understand the Offside Rule, but don't anymore and I find that, actually, the games are quite theatrical with much rolling on the ground and clutching of limbs to get attention.
Live, it's a lot more fun. There's a great atmosphere and it helped that we had good tickets- we could see the footballers really well and could even hear them shouting to each other. There was some swearing, but also a great moment when one of the Cherries shouted to an opposing team member 'go away!' as they neared the edge of the field.
There was some rolling about, but, as any experienced toddler does, once the players realised they weren't getting any attention and the game was carrying on around them, they got up and just carried on.
There was also a very exciteable player on the Leyton Orient team who shouted at the ref, the other players and even his own goalie. He also delivered the most cocky header I've ever seen- he sort of had his arms out in a 'come on, dare to mess with me' kind of attitude and looked more like he was delivering a headbutt. I think he was my favourite, he just kept me so entertained.
There were no goals until the second half, and of course I managed to miss the first one because I was distracted by a noise in the bleachers. Well done me. But! The second goal came in swiftly after that and it was so exciting when it happened (they were both from the Cherries, the home team).
I'd definitely be up for going to another game (this wasn't Premiere League, so there wasn't any agression). Ninety minutes was just enough for me, but I'll certainly be seeking tickets out again.
